We lost a worthy competitor
As the owner of an independent auto glass shop, I want strong competitors in Kitsap County. They give customers choices and push every shop—including ours—to earn its business.
That is why Auto Glass Plus becoming part of Safelite saddens us. We lost a worthy independent competitor. Our community lost another locally owned business.
The ownership change is reflected in Washington’s public records. The Department of Enterprise Services lists Safelite as the successor to Auto Glass Plus in Bremerton on its auto glass contract and says Safelite assumed the Olympic Region, which includes Kitsap County. A storefront is not the same as an independent choice
Customers may still be able to have their windshields replaced at a familiar location. The people working there may still care deeply about their neighbors. Our concern is about ownership and competition.
Kitsap already had chain and franchise auto glass businesses. An independent shop offered a separate owner making decisions about pricing, service and how to respond when something went wrong.
When that shop becomes part of an existing chain, the community loses an independent decision-maker. Counting signs and storefronts does not tell us how many separately owned businesses customers can choose between.
Why a competitor's success matters to us
At valueGLASS, we believe competition is healthy. Customers should be able to compare our estimate, ask another installer for an opinion and choose the business they trust.
We want other independent shops to do good work. Their success gives customers alternatives and gives us a reason to keep improving.
We are not claiming this ownership change has already increased local prices or reduced service quality. Those outcomes would require evidence. We are saying that losing independent ownership deserves attention before people discover that familiar names no longer represent separate choices.
Keep ownership in the conversation
Business owners have every right to sell. The community also has reason to care about what it loses.
When choosing an auto glass shop, ask who owns it, who stands behind the work and what the complete estimate includes. Give a local independent business the opportunity to earn your trust.
Kitsap needs strong independent shops. We want them to succeed—even when we compete for the same customers.
